House, Charles Edward William Joseph

Charles (Chick) Edward William Joseph House werd geboren op 16 april 1920 in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada, als zoon van James en Ellen House. Charles had 3 broers en 4 zussen: Lorne-, James-, Hugh-, Dorothy-, Mary-, Joyce- en Ellen House.

Hoe oud Chick House precies was toen hij sneuvelde is eigenlijk een raadsel. In zijn dossier staat overal in de papieren dat hij geboren is op 16 april 1920, wat zou betekenen dat hij 24 jaar oud was toen hij sneuvelde hier in de omgeving van Leesten.

In het soldatenboekje dat hij, zo aan het handschrift te zien, zelf heeft ingevuld staat echter dat hij geboren is op 16 april 1915. Dan zou hij 29 jaar geweest zijn toen hij stierf. Dit zou ook beter aansluiten bij de aantekening die in zijn dossier is te vinden dat hij van 1930 tot 1939  gedurende 9 jaar vrachtwagen chauffeur is geweest.

En kijken we op zijn grafsteen op de begraafplaats in Holten dan wordt de verwarring nog groter als we daar de leeftijd van 26 jaar op vinden.

Mogelijk achterhalen we ooit wat zijn werkelijke geboortejaar was, maar dat is dan ook meer voor de statistiek van belang. Het feit dat hij op 4 april 1945 in Leesten sneuvelde voor onze vrijheid wordt er niet minder verdrietig om.

De diensttijd van Charles begon op  5 september 1939 toen hij zich meldde bij de  Royal Hamillton Light Infantry in Hamilton. Hij kreeg zijn training in het Canadian Infantry Training Centrum in Borden .
Voordat hij naar Europa vertrok om daar voor onze vrijheid te vechten trouwde hij in 1940 met Dulcie Cythia House.

Op 15 februari 1941 vertrok hij per boot naar Europa waar hij op 28 februari in Gourock Schotland aankwam en werd toegevoegd aan de Canadian Infantry Holding Unit in Witley, Surrey., Engeland.
Charles zette op 13 oktober 1944 voet aan wal in Frankrijk en werd een week later toegevoegd aan de Stormont Dundas and Glengarry Highlanders (de Glens)

Op 21 februari 1945 schreef Charles House de laatste brief aan zijn moeder:

Lieve Moeder, 

Even een paar woorden om je te laten weten dat alles OK is.
Ik hoop dat thuis ook alles goed met jullie  is als u deze brief ontvangt.
Nog even en het is lente, maar deze verdomde oorlog is nog steeds niet afgelopen. Maar we hopen dat het niet lang meer zal duren en dan zullen we allemaal weer naar huis komen en elkaar zien.
Ik ontving een verjaardagskaart van Hugh (zijn broer). Mijn god, hij heeft er wel voor gezorgd dat ik deze op tijd zou ontvangen zeg, is het niet. (Chick House was 16 april jarig en hij kreeg de verjaardagskaart ruim 3 maanden eerder) 
Maar, hoewel te vroeg,  ik ben er natuurlijk erg blij mee. We hebben allemaal erg gelachen om wat Hugh schreef. 
De moffen bestookten ons met hels granaatvuur maar als je een leuke kaart zoals deze krijgt dan geeft je dat weer goede moed.
Ik stuur je wat Duitse Marken als souvenir, het geeft je een idee hoe het geld er uit ziet in Duitsland.

Wel mam, het wordt al laat, ik moet deze brief nu afsluiten.

Op 4 april sneuvelde Charles House tijdens de gevechten in Leesten-West. Hij werd samen met 10 strijdmakkers uit het zelfde regiment tijdelijk begraven bij de RK kerk in Vierakker/Wichmond. Op 1 april 1946 werd hij herbegraven op de Canadian War Cemetery in Holten, Graf XII.F.6

Private Charles (Chick) Edward William Joseph House wordt herdacht met zijn naam op het monument aan de Kerkhofweg in Warnsveld. In 2005 werden 10 straten en een brug genoemd naar de gesneuvelde Glens. Eén van de straten draagt de naam “Housestraat”.

But the exact age of Chick House when he was killed is actually a mystery. In his file it is stated everywhere in the papers that he was born on April 16, 1920, which would mean that he was 24 years old when he died here in the Leesten area.

However, the soldier's booklet that he filled in himself, judging by the handwriting, states that he was born on April 16, 1915. Then he would have been 29 years old when he died. This would also better match the note in his file that he was a truck driver for 9 years from 1930 to 1939.

And if we look at his tombstone in the cemetery in Holten, the confusion becomes even greater when we find the age of 26 years on it.

We may one day find out what his actual year of birth was, but that is more important for statistics. The fact that he died on April 4, 1945 in Leesten for our freedom is no less sad.

Before he left for Europe to fight for our freedom, he married Dulcie Cythia House in 1940.

On February 15, 1941 he leaves by boat for Europe where he arrived in Gourock Scotland on February 28 and was assigned to the Canadian Infantry Holding Unit in Witley, Surrey, England.
Charles sets foot in France on October 13, 1944 and is added a week later to the Stormont Dundas and Glengarry Highlanders (the Glens)

On February 21, 1945, Charles House wrote this last letter to his mother:

Dear mother,

Just a few words to let you know that everything is OK and hoping the letter find it the same with you all at home.
Well it won't be long now before the spring is here and this damn war is still going on. 
But we are hoping it don't last to much longer and then we'll all be home together again.
I received a birthday card from Hugh (brother). My god, he made sure I got this one on time, didn't he. (Chick House's birthday was April 16 and he got the birthday card over 3 months earlier)
But, although too early, I am of course very happy with it. We all laughed a lot at what Hugh wrote.
And although the Jerries were shelling hell aut of us, to get a nice card like this it sure put a fellows moral up.
I'm sending you some Germand marks for souvenir and  give you an idea of ​​what the money is like in Germany.

On April 4, Charles House was killed during the fighting in Leesten-West. He was temporarily buried together with 10 comrades-in-arms from the same regiment at the Roman Catholic Church between Vierakker and Wichmond. On April 1, 1946, he was reburied at the Canadian War Cemetery in Holten, Grave XII.F.6

Private Charles (Chick) Edward William Joseph House is commemorated with his name on the monument at Kerkhofweg in Warnsveld. In 2005, 10 streets and a bridge are named after the fallen Glens. One of the streets bears the name "Housestraat".
