Het West Nova Scotia Regiment

verliet Halifax en ging kort na Kerstmis in 1939 van boord in Gourock, Schotland; ze werden onmiddellijk vervoerd naar Aldershot, Engeland. Op 15 juni 1943 begon het regiment vanuit Engeland, in het eerste deel van "Operatie Husky" de invasie van Sicilië. Het West Nova Scotia Regiment was de eerste geallieerde eenheid die landde en gedurende de gehele oorlog op het Europese vasteland bleef.

Het regiment bleef vechten in Italië tot 9 februari 1945, toen LCol Hiltz orders ontving waarin hem werd meegedeeld dat het eerste Canadese korps van Italië naar Noordwest-Europa zou worden overgebracht. Het regiment verhuisde over zee naar Marseille, Frankrijk en arriveerde in Nederland tot de Duitse capitulatie op 5 mei 1945. Gedurende deze tijd won het regiment zesentwintig battle honours, naast de Distinguished Service Order, het Military Cross, Distinguished Conduct Medal en vele anderen.
Van Sicilië tot Nederland zijn er 352 graven van West Novas die tijdens de oorlog het hoogste offer brachten. Er waren ook 1084 gewonden en vermisten.

In Zutphen heeft het West Nova Scotia Regiment geen strijd geleverd. Op 12 april 1945 passeerde het de stad om zich te concentreren bij boerderij 't Barge in Eefde om de volgende dag samen met de 1e Canadese divisie de IJssel over te steken (Operation Canon Shot) 

Helaas was er in de directe omgeving van Zutphen toch een slachtoffer te betreuren door een noodlottig ongeval.

The West Nova Scotia Regiment

left Halifax and disembarked at Gourock, Scotland shortly after Christmas in 1939; they immediately entrained for Aldershot, England. On June 15, 1943 the regiment embarked from England, in the first part of "Operation Husky" the invasion of Sicily. The West Nova Scotia Regiment was the first allied unit to land and stay on the continent of Europe for the entire duration of the war.

The Regiment continued to fight in Italy until February 9, 1945, when LCol Hiltz received orders informing him that the ist Canadian Corps would be transferred from Italy to Northwest Europe. The Regiment moved to Marseilles, France, by sea and arrived in Holland until the German surrender on May 5, 1945. During this time the Regiment won twenty six theatre and battle honours, in addition to the Distinguished Service Order, the Military Cross, Distinguished Conduct Medal and many others.
From Sicily to Holland there are 352 graves of West Novas who paid the final sacrifice during the war. There were also 1084 wounded and missing.

The West Nova Scotia Regiment did not fight in Zutphen. On April 12, 1945 it passed the city to concentrate at farm 't Barge in Eefde to cross the IJssel the next day together with the 1st Canadian Division (Operation Canon Shot)

Unfortunately, there was still a victim in the immediate vicinity of Zutphen due to a fatal accident.
